GENERAL PURPOSE
Under the Golf Course Superintendent's supervision, the Greenskeeper directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course tees, greens, fairways, and cart paths. Supervises the maintenance and repair of motorized and other mechanical equipment. The Greenskeeper will serve in the Golf Course Superintendent's capacity during his/her absence.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May exercise supervision over Maintenance Mechanic, MW II, Seasonal golf course laborers and part-time laborers. Will serve as Golf Course Superintendent during his/her absence.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees and fairways.
- Schedules work and supervises the employees and the use of the equipment.
- Instructs equipment operators in the operation and care of mowing and other equipment.
- Supervises pesticide and fertilizer application and/or operates calibrates pesticide application equipment.
- Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps and the drainage system, and in the programming, operation and maintenance of a computer operated irrigation system.
- Assists in personnel management including training, performance management, discipline and safety. May modify the daily work schedule of staff as needed.
- Assists with the direction of an ergonomically sophisticated turf grass management program designed to provide a playing surface that meets the Municipal Golf Courses aesthetic and playing standards, while preserving the integrity of the environment.
- Assists in the construction, renovation, and/or reconstruction of golf course properties, whether performed by maintenance staff or outside contractors.
- Assists in the preparation of annual budgets of the maintenance and capital improvement of golf course properties.
- Plans all maintenance and project work under the direction of the Golf Course Superintendent, applying agronomic and administrative expertise to achieve the agreed-upon maintenance standards and long-range goals. This is especially important in the care of the greens and tees.
- Operates and maintains a variety of general and special purpose equipment.
- Assists in acquiring equipment and purchases necessary supplies to maintain the golf course and other properties.
- Assists in developing an irrigation, fertilization and pesticide application plan and oversees its implementation.
- Assists in keeping accurate and complete records in payroll, inventory, weather data, maintenance procedures, pesticide applications, material applications, location of hazardous materials, etc.
- Assists in programming the computerized automatic irrigation system with appropriate data (weather information, evaporation and transpiration rates, soil permeability, etc.) to insure proper watering intervals on tees, greens and fairways.
- Assists in achieving and documenting compliance with various government regulations that impact golf course management, including EPS's underground storage tank requirements, pesticide applicator certification requirements and pesticides storage rules, OSHA Hazardous Communications Standards, etc.
- Assists in developing and maintaining an aesthetically pleasing landscape program.
- In the Golf Course Superintendent's absence, services as an expert informational resource on golf course and turf grass management for golfers.
- Assists with the supervision and participates in the work involved in maintaining trees, fairways, greens, roughs, traps/ditches, cutting grass, dressing greens, sodding, fertilizing, seeding, watering, etc.
- Assists in maintaining a chemical inventory, ordering additional supplies as necessary and keeping the appropriate records and documentation.
- Provide quality and effective customer service with courtesy and understanding to our customers, citizens and internal departments.
- Performs related work as may be required.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course tees, fairways, greens.
- Working knowledge of the seeding and maintenance practices of golf course turf, including the planting, cultivating, pruning and caring for plants, shrubs and trees.
- Working knowledge of the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditions; herbicides and pest control methods and materials; drainage control methods; and irrigation system, including wells, pumps and computer-assisted automatic controls.
- Ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient. utilization of personnel and equipment resources.
- Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
- Ability to maintain effective employee and public relations.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Requires the use of tractors, tractor attachments, all types of grass cutting mowers riding as well as hand operated mowers. All power tools and equipment associated with the operation of maintaining the golf course and clubhouse grounds.
Requires daily use of personal computer and mainframe computer, copier, fax machine, telephone, cell phone and other radio devices.
